According to the decision by the ministry and the GES to order the first-year students to resume school days after they received their school placement.
This decision was met with public criticism, with some stakeholders in the education sector, including teacher unions, urging the ministry to reconsider the resumption date to allow parents more time to prepare their children for school.
However, Dr. Adutwum, speaking in parliament after being summoned by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, explained that the resumption date could not be changed. He stated that the GES aims to return to the pre-COVID school calendar, to open schools in October or September in the future.

“Last year school opened in February for first-year students, this year we are opening in December which gives us the opportunity to then open in October or September and therefore go back to the pre-Covid calendar as we are all envisaging,” he said.
He added that compared to last year a lot of the students have received their placement (over 81%) which means that academic work can start for them.

He also emphasized that parents were informed of the resumption date and had ample time to prepare. Additionally, he refuted claims that teachers were overworked due to the double-track system, pointing out that a majority of students had already received their placement and were ready to begin academic work.
Overall, Dr. Adutwum defended the decision as a step towards returning to a more regular school calendar and ensuring that students could start their academic year on time.
