TUC Calls For The Elimination Of Article 71

Dr Anthony Yaw Baah, Secretary-General of the TUC

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has urged for the elimination of Article 71 of the 1992 Constitution, which grants special salaries and benefits to certain officeholders. The TUC argues that this provision is unfair and creates a privileged class of individuals at the expense of other public sector workers.

Dr Anthony Yaw Baah, the Secretary-General of the TUC, believes that Article 71 promotes discrimination and injustice, contradicting other constitutional provisions such as Article 24, which calls for equal pay for equal work without distinction. Dr Baah stressed the importance of either amending or removing Article 71 from the Constitution.

In order to protect public servants from discrimination, dismissal, and demotion without just cause, Dr Baah advocated for strict enforcement of Article 191 of the 1992 Constitution. He expressed concern over the current politicization of public service, which has made public servants vulnerable to unjustifiable dismissals and intimidation by politicians following a change in government.
