ChaLoG Endorses Mahama’s 24-Hour Economy Policy

The Chamber for Local Governance (ChaLoG) has stepped into the spotlight by throwing its full support behind the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, and his proposed 24-hour economy policy. The association has expressed confidence in the potential of this policy to significantly enhance revenue generation and, in turn, elevate service delivery within the public sector.

In a press release signed by the President, Dr. Richard Fiadomor, and other executives, ChaLoG made a resounding endorsement of the 24-hour economy policy, fully aligning with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in describing it as a "GAME CHANGER." The release emphasizes that the implementation of this policy could revolutionize the local governance system in the country, breathing life into the concept of decentralization and citizen participation.

The press release also highlighted specific areas where ChaLoG foresees a positive impact if the 24-hour economy policy is put into action. It emphasizes that the policy has the potential to bolster local economic development and result in a natural upsurge in revenues allocated to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies through the District Assemblies Common Fund. Moreover, ChaLoG underlined that the policy could address the challenge faced by many assemblies in collecting property taxes during the daytime, as it could enable them to gather revenues and exercise development control even during nighttime hours.

In closing, ChaLoG called upon all patriotic Ghanaians to rally behind the policy, portraying it as sound, pragmatic, and carefully deliberated. This endorsement comes in the wake of former President Mahama's articulated promotion of the 24-hour economy policy during his Build Ghana Tour.

The policy has specifically been positioned by Mr. Mahama as a potential remedy to the compelling issue of Ghanaian youth embarking on hazardous journeys through the Sahara and the Mediterranean in quest of better prospects in Europe.

However, this stance has not gone unchallenged. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has critiqued Mr. Mahama's grasp of the policy, highlighting existing 24-hour operational sectors, such as healthcare, security services, and digital transactions, attributed to the digitalization agenda championed since 2017.
