"I Will Merge These Ministries As Part Of Economic Recovery If Elected In 2024" - John Mahama

(John Dramani Mahama)

Former President John Dramani Mahama, who secured the NDC's flagbearer position for the 2024 general elections in May, has outlined a series of policy proposals that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would execute if he is elected as President.

In a recent Facebook post on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, Mahama emphasized his government's commitment to implementing policies aimed at restoring economic stability. Part of his proposed initiatives includes a strategic overhaul of the ministerial framework, involving the consolidation of ministries such as Transport, Aviation, and Railways into a unified entity. Additionally, he highlighted plans to merge the portfolios of Sanitation and Local Government, reflecting an endeavor to streamline governmental functions and improve operational efficiency.

Moreover, Mahama pledged to undertake significant reforms pertaining to the reduction of the number of ministers and appointees, aiming to merge ministerial portfolios to substantially prune down the number of ministries. He also apprised the public of his intent to review and eliminate ex-gratia in its existing form, signaling a comprehensive evaluation of expenditure and governance operations.

Furthermore, his policy agenda included commitments to curbing waste, cost overruns, institutional borrowing, and violations of public procurement regulations, while ensuring compliance with internal and external financial control mechanisms. Additionally, he proposed the recalibration and amalgamation of duplicated state agencies, along with discontinuing the payment of utility bills, fuel, DSTV services, and similar expenses as part of high-ranking government employees' service conditions.

During an engagement forum held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, with the leadership of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Accra as part of his "Building Ghana Tour," Mahama articulated a vision to rejuvenate the Ghanaian economy from what he described as a "sloppy decline" experienced under the current leadership. Moreover, he unveiled plans to introduce a 24-hour economy work schedule, aiming to reinvigorate the national economy.

Expanding on the 24-hour economy strategy, Mahama underscored the potential for businesses, supported by the government, to operate on a round-the-clock basis, providing a solution to the unemployment situation and bolstering the country's economic prospects.

Elected to lead the NDC once again in May 2023 after securing a resounding victory, Mahama is poised to contend against Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who currently spearheads the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP). Dr. Bawumia clinched the NPP presidential primary with a sweeping 118,210 votes, representing 61.43% of all valid votes.
