Korle-Bu Renal Unit Re-opens Today

The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital's renal unit is scheduled to reopen for patient care today, November 6, barring any unforeseen circumstances.

There was a unanimous decision to reopen the facility to outpatients during a meeting on Friday, November 3, according to reports. Closure of the renal unit for several months will therefore come to an end with this. During the period of closure, patients were forced to seek out dialysis services elsewhere, primarily in private healthcare facilities, as the unit had been unavailable to them since May 22, 2023. Though the unit was partially opened on September 27, it was accompanied by a significant increase in the cost of dialysis treatment per session from GH¢380 to GHS¢765.42. This led to the loud cry of the public especially patients and relatives of patients who had lost their lives. Although the increase in price was reversed, the renal unit was closed again.
