The closure of the Renal Unit at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has sparked concerns among members of Parliament, leading to the summoning of Minister of Health Kwaku Agyeman-Manu. The issue was raised by Juaboso Member of Parliament Kwabena Mintah Akandoh during a parliamentary session on November 3.

Aaondoh emphasized the urgency of the matter and the need for immediate intervention, particularly due to the tragic loss of life associated with the closure. This prompted Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, to schedule a briefing with the Health Minister on November 9. The Minister will be expected to provide insights regarding the closure of the Renal Unit's outpatient department and address the increasing prevalence of kidney-related problems in Ghana. Additionally, Parliament will inquire if the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) can cover kidney treatment.

According to the Renal Patients Association, 14 outpatients of the Renal Unit have died since the closure in May 2023. These deaths were attributed to the patient's inability to afford dialysis treatment at private health centers. Michael Asante, a spokesperson for the Association, expressed concerns during a press conference in Accra. He revealed that the closure since May 22 has left renal patients in a precarious situation, as they struggle to finance their dialysis treatment at private centers. This unfortunate circumstance has instilled fear among the remaining patients who worry about the possibility of unnecessary loss of life in the future.
