Moussa Dadis Camara Returned To Jail After Kidnap From Prison

Moussa Dadis Camara, the former military ruler of Guinea, has been returned to jail after being forcibly taken from prison by armed individuals, as confirmed by his lawyer. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning when a group stormed a prison in the capital city of Conakry, seizing Captain Camara and three others. The individuals taken are currently on trial for their alleged involvement in the deaths of over 150 people during a protest in 2009. Alongside Captain Camara, two additional prisoners have been discovered, although it remains unclear whether they were kidnapped or freed by their supporters.

Capt Camara's lawyer previously informed the BBC that the former leader was taken against his will and that he had no intention of escaping prison as he had faith in the Guinean judicial system. In response to the escape, Guinea's Justice Minister, Charles Alphonse Wright, announced on local radio that they would locate the fugitives and hold those responsible accountable. Gunshots were reported in Conakry before dawn, leading to the city center being cordoned off and military vehicles patrolling the streets.

Among the escapees is Col Claude Pivi, a former government minister accused of involvement in the massacre at Conakry stadium on September 28, 2009, where at least 157 people were killed during a protest against military rule. Numerous women were also subjected to sexual assault. Both Col Pivi and Capt Camara, along with nine other former officials, have denied the allegations brought against them. Capt Camara specifically faces charges of commanding the soldiers responsible for the alleged crimes.

Following the Conakry killings and an assassination attempt, he was ousted from power and fled the country. The 59-year-old had been residing in Burkina Faso until his return to Guinea in September 2022 to face justice.

Guinea is currently under military rule, joining several other former French colonies in West and Central Africa that have experienced coup d'états in the past three years. The most recent coup occurred in 2021 when former French soldier Col Mamady Doumbouya led a rebellion against President Alpha Condé. Col Doumbouya subsequently assumed the presidency.
