Government Will Offer Post-Retirement Contracts For Medical Doctors - President Akufo-Addo



President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed the government's readiness to deliberate on a proposal set forth by the leadership of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, calling for the provision of automatic post-retirement contracts to fellows who have reached the mandatory retirement age. This initiative aims to enable them to continue training medical specialists in the country.

During the maiden awards night of the college held in Accra, the President disclosed his intention to facilitate the submission of a comprehensive policy document on post-retirement contracts for medical fellows who have reached retirement age. This document is expected to encompass the necessary details associated with the post-retirement contracts while also outlining mechanisms to prevent potential abuse of this initiative.

President Akufo-Addo stressed his commitment to positioning Ghana as the "Centre of excellence for medical care in West Africa by 2030." He emphasized that this vision extends beyond mere infrastructure development and involves strategic investments in healthcare infrastructure, the alignment of regional health facilities with specializations, and the upgrade of regional and teaching hospitals to world-class standards. The President also highlighted the constitutional mandate that has enshrined access to quality healthcare as a fundamental right, emphasizing the importance of constructing adequate health facilities to realize this right fully.


The President underscored the government's dedication to enhancing the healthcare delivery system through initiatives such as "Agenda 111," which aims to establish 101 standard 100-bed capacity district hospitals. In addition, the government is committed to constructing six new regional hospitals, rehabilitating existing healthcare facilities, and building psychiatric hospitals in select regions. This holistic package of healthcare development stands as a testament to the government's focus on improving healthcare services within the country.

President Akufo-Addo provided an update on the progress of the ongoing healthcare infrastructure projects, noting that construction work is underway for numerous district hospitals and regional healthcare facilities. The substantial investment, estimated at US$1.765 billion, underscores the government's determination to advance and modernize the healthcare sector, ultimately enhancing healthcare accessibility and quality nationwide.

According to the president, out of the 89 ongoing projects, 52% are still awaiting completion on average. It is important to highlight that native Ghanaian contractors are building these hospitals, giving Ghanaians both direct and indirect employment, with work at some of the sites reaching 70 to 80 percent completion.
