Mental Health Care Will Be Included In NHIS Next Year - President Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has unveiled a significant governmental initiative, expressing the intent to incorporate mental health treatment into the coverage provided by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). 

This announcement came during a meeting with physicians and surgeons in Accra on Tuesday, December 12, where the President underscored the collective importance of addressing mental health concerns within the framework of national healthcare.

With a resolute aim at achieving universal health coverage, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the pivotal role of ensuring the availability of mental health specialists within hospitals across the country. In his address, he emphasized the imminent inclusion of mental healthcare as part of the benefits package provided by the NHIS starting next year. The President's commitment to expanding healthcare provisions to encompass mental health services signifies a crucial step toward addressing the holistic well-being of Ghanaians.

Acknowledging the essential role of specialists in advancing comprehensive healthcare, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the need to aim higher in setting targets for universal health coverage. He urged for concerted efforts and collaboration among various professional health bodies in the country, stressing the shared responsibility in achieving Ghana's universal health coverage objectives. 

The collaboration is envisioned to involve the active participation of institutions such as the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Ghana Medical and Dental Council, the Ghana Health Service, and the Ministry of Health.
