Trafigura Deal: Ablakwa To Summon Ministers of Finance And Energy Before Parliament


Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the MP for North Tongu, has said that he will start the process of calling the Attorney General, the Ministers of Finance and Energy before Parliament. This relates to the payment of GH¢230 million to Trafigura to satisfy a judgment obligation.

An arbitral panel determined that Ghana had illegally terminated a contract for the installation and operation of two power plants, and Trafigura, the primary owner of Ghana Power Generation Company (GPGC), was awarded $170 million as a result. In order to begin the payment process, the government has given $20 million; nevertheless, Ablakwa feels that the ministers responsible for the various sectors should explain why such a substantial sum of money was disbursed.

Ablakwa stressed the importance of responsibility and declared their determination to see this issue through to the end. He drew attention to the huge sum of money being squandered and the potential effects on social concerns and infrastructure. He gave his word that they would keep looking into the issue and bring those in charge accountable.
