The Ghana Education Service (GES) has initiated measures to identify unqualified Junior High School (JHS) students in Forms One and Two who skipped classes to sit for the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). As part of this process, the GES has instructed regional, metro, and district directors of education to provide the names of attending and absent JHS 1 and JHS 2 students during the 2023 BECE week, which took place from Monday, August 7th to Friday, August 11th, 2023. School heads, both in public and private schools, have also been mandated to submit the names of JHS one and two students.

Additionally, the GES has requested the attendance records of all JHS 2 students during the 2021/2022 academic year. This move aims to track the attendance of students who took the 2023 BECE in August, within the context of their attendance history during the previous academic year.

According to education experts, the GES intends to identify unqualified students in Forms One and Two who jumped grades and sat for the 2023 BECE. These students may face disqualification from entering senior high school (SHS) in Form One, and there may be repercussions for both the students and school heads involved in facilitating such actions.

Release Date For BECE 2023

The results for the 2023 BECE are expected to be released between the last week of October 2023 and the first week of November 2023. Consequently, Form One students for senior high school (SHS) are scheduled to commence classes around the first week of December 2023. The GES has communicated with all regional directors of education regarding this matter, requesting a list of JHS 2 students who took the 2023 BECE during the 2021/2022 academic year, from both public and private schools.

BECE 2023 Statistics

Remarkably, a total of 602,457 final-year JHS students nationwide participated in the 2023 BECE, indicating an increase of 49,049 candidates compared to the previous year. Education watchdogs have expressed concerns about the unprecedented number of candidates and the potential challenges faced by the GES in placing all students in Form One of senior high school (SHS) under the free SHS policy.

As the process continues, heads of public junior high schools have been instructed to submit the attendance registers of their JHS 2 classes from the 2021/2022 academic year to their respective Metro/Municipal/District Directors of Education. The deadline for the submission of these records, along with the names of absentee JHS students in Forms 1 and 2, particularly during the specified period of August 7th to 11th, 2023, is set for Wednesday, October 18, 2023. The Metro/Municipal/District Directors of Education are responsible for compiling and submitting the names of absentees to the Director-General through their respective Regional Directors of Education.
