Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has demonstrated his support for victims of the devastating water spillage from the Akosombo Dam by personally donating GH¢160,000. During his visit to affected communities in the Volta Region on Wednesday, October 17, Dr. Bawumia made the contribution to assist the victims.
The Vice President's personal donation is intended to complement the support already provided by the government to those displaced by the flood. Dr. Bawumia expressed his condolences and assured the victims that the government is committed not only to providing immediate emergency solutions but also to offering relief that will help restore their livelihoods.
Dr. Bawumia addressed the affected individuals, acknowledging the sadness evident in their eyes and the disruption caused to their lives by the incident. He reassured them of the government's determination to assist and provide relief, emphasizing a focus on both short-term and sustained support through the Inter-Ministerial Committee. The aim is to restore the livelihoods of those affected and offer ongoing assistance beyond temporary relief.
The government has already made efforts to address the disaster by evacuating affected individuals to 20 holding centers and providing emergency relief items. These actions were carried out through the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the Inter-Ministerial Committee, established on the instructions of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to effectively manage the crisis.

During his visit, Vice President Dr. Bawumia traveled to various communities, including New Bakpa in the Central Tongu District, as well as Sogakope and Sokpoe in the South Tongu District. The spillage has impacted several communities across eight districts, mainly in the Volta Region, as well as the Eastern and Greater Accra regions. The resulting floods have caused the displacement of thousands of individuals.
Dr. Bawumia's personal donation exemplifies the government's commitment to providing much-needed assistance to the flood victims and helping them rebuild their lives in the face of this disaster.
