Government Pushing For Law To Ban Import Of ‘Yemuadie’, Rice, Others Without Committee Approval

Earlier this week, it was reported that the government is proposing to implement a regulation that would limit the importation of certain products, which they consider to be strategic. The Minority has called for the establishment of a committee to evaluate this move, but the government is moving forward without it.

The list of items that could be restricted includes rice, fruit juices, yemuadie, fish, cement, and 17 other items. The Minority successfully blocked the attempt to lay the regulation last Monday and has requested further consultations with the Subsidiary Legislation Committee. 

Trade Minister KT Hammond has defended the regulation to journalists, emphasizing its importance to the government. 



The full list of 22 items being considered for import restriction is as follows: 

rice, guts, bladders and stomach of animals, poultry, animal and vegetable oil, margarine, fruit juices, soft drinks, mineral water, noodles and pasta, ceramic tiles, corrugated paper and paper board, mosquito coil and insecticides, soaps and detergents, motor cars, iron and steel, cement, polymers (plastics and plastic products), fish, sugar, clothing and apparel, biscuits, and canned tomatoes.
