GFL Declares 2024 as a Year of Action for Labour

The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has heralded 2024 as a pivotal and proactive year for labor, urging unions to mobilize in advocating for fair wages and improved working conditions. Describing the need for active participation, the federation emphasized the necessity for labor unions to proactively demand their equitable share of remuneration and seek better conditions of service.

Call to Arms and Solitary Front

Abraham Koomson, the General Secretary of the Ghana Federation of Labour, emphasized the call to action, rallying labor union leadership to fortify their unity and stand up for the interests of Ghanaian workers. The focus lies on advocating for elevated salaries, fair work hours, and safer working environments. Koomson underscored the heightened importance of labor unions actively engaging in the fight for improved conditions, portraying a steadfast stand against any actions that undermine worker welfare, whether from the government or management of business entities.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Tema regarding labor expectations for 2024, Koomson stressed the potential consequences of inaction, highlighting the risk of widespread dissatisfaction among workers and potential backlash against leadership if the interests of workers are not vigorously championed.

Addressing Labor Challenges and Targeted Solutions

Mr. Koomson pointed out the previous year's labor unrest, reflecting worker frustrations concerning government policies that have adversely impacted labor welfare. He further admonished public sector managers to establish clear, measurable targets for employees while ensuring the provision of essential tools to support their work. He identified inadequate supervision within ministries, departments, and agencies as a critical factor contributing to subpar worker performances, emphasizing the need to hold senior management and supervisors accountable for shortcomings in achieving set targets.

Reformation and Fair Treatment

The General Secretary suggested the reinstatement of a clock-in-and-out system to enforce punctuality and underscored the need for greater accountability. He voiced his concern over discriminatory practices prevalent in the labor market, emphasizing the imperative to rectify unfair treatment and level the playing field. Particularly, Mr. Koomson highlighted the disparity in retirement benefits, advocating for uniform treatment of workers as they retire, without discrimination.
