Don't Send Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill to Akufo-Addo for approval - Presidency to Parliament

The Office of the President has formally requested Parliament to refrain from sending the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values, known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, to President Akufo-Addo for approval.

In a letter dated Monday, March 18, and signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo, the request was made due to two pending applications for an order of interlocutory injunction currently before the Supreme Court.

The letter stressed that it would be inappropriate for Parliament to proceed with transmitting the Bill to President Akufo-Addo for any action until the court cases are resolved. It was also revealed that the Attorney-General has advised the President against taking any action on the Bill until the legal issues raised in the ongoing suits are settled by the Supreme Court.

The letter stated, “It is the understanding of this Office that both applications have also been duly served on Parliament. Therefore, it would be improper for you to transmit the Bill to the President and equally improper for this Office to receive the Bill until the Supreme Court determines the matters raised in the suits.”

Parliament's attempt to submit the Bill to the President while he was at a Cabinet Retreat at Peduase on Thursday, March 14, was also highlighted in the letter.
