Political Personalities Visit Communities Affected By Akosombo Dam Spillage

Following the unfortunate incident of the Akosombo dam spillage, a number of politicians have expressed their concern and dissatisfaction in different ways. Others have gone the length of extending helping hands by providing resources to the victims. Noted among such politicians are Alan Kyerematen, the Founder of Movement for Change, and John Dramani Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who embarked on a tour of the affected communities.

The spillage from the Akosombo Dam has resulted in several residents being displaced from their homes, with thousands of homes submerged in floodwaters. The situation remains dire as the spillage continues to wreak havoc on the communities.

During a visit to Mepe, one of the affected communities, Alan Kyerematen described the situation as a national disaster and pleaded for assistance from all sectors of society. He expressed his empathy for the individuals facing the inconveniences caused by the spillage, acknowledging that although no casualties were recorded, many people had been uprooted from their homes.

Kyerematen recognized the limitations in addressing a natural disaster of this magnitude, stating that he hoped for a swift resolution to the crisis. He pledged support for the flood victims in the upcoming months and urged residents to remain calm, while also stressing the importance of the District Assembly's efforts in saving lives.

Meanwhile, residents affected by the spillage continue to appeal for assistance from the government. Many individuals have sought refuge in classrooms, desperately seeking shelter and support. The dire situation underscores the urgent need for government intervention to alleviate the suffering of the affected communities.

John Dramani Mahama who also visited Mepe, one of the affected communities, called for the desilting of the Lower Volta Basin, particularly the estuary at Ada, as this would help mitigate the flooding caused by the spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams. Mahama emphasized the importance of swift action from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to provide relief items and implement security measures to protect lives and property.

Mahama expressed his disappointment in the lack of resources available to NADMO, attributing it to the government's failure to adequately support the organization. He called on the government to prioritize the welfare of citizens and ensure that NADMO has the necessary resources to respond effectively to such crises.
