NPA To Introduce Octane-Based Labeling For Petrol Pumps To Ensure Quality Fuel Delivery

Concerns about the quality of gasoline in Ghana prompted Ubeidalah Saeed, the National Petroleum Authority's (NPA) Head of Quality Control, to announce steps to put these worries into action.

The NPA has taken steps to introduce labeled pumps based on the available petrol grades in response to recent allegations of damaged spark plugs connected to poor quality fuel. Mr. Saeed confirmed that the NPA's assessments have not found any contaminated fuel in the market, despite accusations of polluted gasoline. Rather, he highlighted the potential for car owners to inadvertently use the incorrect fuel, which might result in problems with the vehicle's performance.

Mr. Saeed stressed the crucial role of fuel octane levels in resolving vehicle performance issues such as jerking, highlighting the significance of considering this factor when encountering automotive troubles. The NPA's initiative to test for octane levels in petrol aims to reassure consumers of the fuel's quality, with Mr. Saeed emphasizing the rigorous testing demonstrating compliance with octane requirements. The decision to label petrol pumps based on octane levels starting next year is a proactive step towards empowering consumers to make informed decisions about their fuel selection.

To provide clarity and minimize misconceptions, Ghana's petrol pumps will be distinguished based on octane grades, offering RON 91 (red) and RON 95 (green) petrol options. The latter, known as premium petrol, represents a high-grade fuel suitable for high-performing vehicles. This clear differentiation between the two grades seeks to guide consumers in identifying and selecting the appropriate fuel for their vehicles.
